Beef burgers recalled in Canada over E. coli risk

burgers recall2The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued a Health Hazard Alert relating to certain frozen beef burgers that may be linked to an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infection

The manufacturer of the beef burgers, Belmont Meats Ltd., Toronto, is voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace. The recall includes all best before dates of Compliments brand Super 8 Beef Burgers, plus certain other batches of beef burgers sold under the Compliments, President’s Choice and Webers Bucket of Burgers brands. The recalled burgers have been distributed in Ontario and nationally through a number of different retailers.

According to Canadian press reports, at least seven people in Ontario were made ill by the outbreak strain of E. coli O157:H7 in August and September and four of these required hospital treatment. The outbreak investigation is continuing and more information about the recall can be found here.
