Cheese spreads recalled over Listeria risk

cheese spread recallThe US Food and Drug Administration has announced that Oscars Smokehouse Inc., of Warrensburg, New York, is recalling certain Cheese Spread varieties because of possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

The recall includes 11 products packed in 7-oz clear plastic containers marked with three digit lot numbers from 719-959. The recalled spreads were distributed nationwide through mail order sales, wholesale outlets and one retail store between 21st March 2013 and 21st March 2014.

Routine testing by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture showed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in 15 products, which included bulk samples of cheese spread base produced by Parkers Farm Acquisition LLC and used to manufacture the recalled spreads. Production of the cheese spread base has been suspended while the contamination is investigated.
