According to News Agency reports in Romania, an outbreak of E. coli O26 infection affecting children in Arges County may be linked to dairy products, in particular cottage cheese, produced by the local Lactate Bradet dairy unit.
The reports state that 51 children have been hospitalised in Arges County with diarrhoea and five are being treated for haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) in Bucharest. One of these is currently in intensive care with “neurological problems” and many of the children affected are reported to be less than two years old.
According to the News Agency, the Romanian Minister of Agriculture, Achim Irimescu, has stated that E. coli has been isolated from dairy product samples taken from the Lactate Bradet facility, specifically a 25 kg batch of cottage cheese.
