The Opinion includes detailed information about all of the 14 allergenic food products and substances, including peanuts, milk, eggs and shellfish, whose presence must be indicated on product labels in accordance with EU law, but does not cover adverse reactions to food that are classified as food intolerance.

For each allergen, information is provided about prevalence, the proteins identified as allergens, cross reactivity, the effects of food processing, detection methods and the doses likely to trigger reactions in sensitive individuals.

EFSA’s Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies estimates the prevalence of food allergy in adults and children in Europe and about 1%, although it is recognised that it is difficult to establish an accurate figure because of the varied methods used to gather data in different countries.

The Opinion can be found in full on the EFSA website here.
