EFSA assesses two insecticides for possible neurotoxicity

| December 18, 2013

efsaheadquarters sizedThe European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has highlighted a potential link between two neonicotinoid insecticides – acetamiprid and imidacloprid – and developmental neurotoxicity in humans.

The announcement came in a scientific opinion delivered by the Authority’s expert Panel on Plant Protection Products and their Residues at the request of the European Commission following the publication of recent research suggesting a link between these compounds and damage to the developing human brain.

The Panel examined the available data and found that both acetamiprid and imidacloprid could adversely affect the development of brain structures associated with learning and memory. They concluded that the existing guidance levels for exposure to these pesticides may not be adequate and should be reduced pending the results of further research to give a more reliable indication of neurotoxicity.
