Hepatitis A outbreak linked to frozen berry and cherry blend

| April 19, 2016

berriesThe Public Health Agency of Canada is investigating an outbreak of hepatitis A viral infections that has been linked to a frozen fruit product called Nature’s Touch Organic Berry Cherry Blend sold exclusively through Costco warehouses in five provinces.

To date, 13 cases associated with the outbreak have been reported in Ontario, Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador. Those affected became ill during February and March and five people have been hospitalised.

Some of the people affected by the outbreak have reported eating the implicated frozen fruit product before becoming sick. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced that Nature’s Choice recalled their Organic berry Cherry Blend on 15 April because of possible hepatitis A virus contamination.

The recalled product is sold in 1.5 kg packs marked with Best Before dates up to and including 2018 MR 15 and a UPC of 8 73668 00179 1. It has been distributed through Costco warehouse locations in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador.

More information about the outbreak investigation can be found here and more details on the product recall here.
