Large Salmonella outbreak at UK food festival

| March 22, 2013

The UK Health Protection Agency (HPA) has announced that at least 250 people have reported suffering from the symptoms of gastroenteritis after attending the ‘Street Spice’ food festival in Newcastle.

Eight of those affected have so far tested positive for Salmonella, with more tests in progress. As yet the source of the outbreak has not been identified, but investigations are continuing with the cooperation of the event organisers and local businesses.

Approximately 12,000 people attended the festival, which took place between 28 February and 2 March in the city’s Times Square. Those attending have been advised to complete an on-line questionnaire, whether they have been ill or not.
