Listeria risk prompts recall of pan-fried anchovies

anchoviesThe US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that HAR Maspeth Corp. of Maspeth, New York, is recalling 2-and 4-ounce packs of Jinga brand “Pan Fried Anchovies” because of contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

The recalled product is sold in clear plastic packs carrying an expiration date of “9/28/2014” stamped on the top. Distribution was nationwide through retail outlets and mail order.

The contamination problem was discovered when Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Food Inspectors sampled and tested the product and detected the presence of Listeria monocytogenes. An alleged case of illness related to the recalled pan-fried anchovies has been reported.
