Public warned over turkey products from unapproved premises

| December 27, 2013

TurkeysThe UK Food Standards Agency has issued advice to consumers not to eat turkey butterflies processed by Severnside Provisions Ltd at unapproved premises in Newport, South Wales.

The Agency suspects that about 18 tonnes of turkey butterflies have been supplied to independent butchers and catering businesses in Wales and parts of England. Eight tonnes have so far been prevented from entering the food chain by the local authority in Newport.

Severnside Provisions premises are approved for processing bacon, but do not meet the food hygiene requirements for processing turkeys. There is no evidence of a public health risk at present but supplying meat from unapproved premises is illegal. An operation is now under way to locate the remaining product and withdraw it from sale.
