Rare Salmonella strain identified in Norwegian outbreak

| December 5, 2013

ecoliThe Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH) has announced that a rare Salmonella serovar, Salmonella Coeln, has been confirmed in 18 people from 12 counties across Norway.

The NIPH has been notified of just 0-3 cases of illness caused by this serovar on average over each of the last ten years, suggesting that an outbreak is now in progress. The vehicle of infection is unknown, but the NIPH is collaborating with the Norwegian Veterinary Institute and the Norwegian Food Safety Authority to try and identify a common source for the reported cases.

The NIPH statement can be found here.
