The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has updated its investigation report on the multistate outbreak of Salmonella Virchow infection linked to RAW Meal Organic Shake & Meal powdered supplements and meal replacement powders produced by Garden of Life LLC.
A further seven cases of illness linked to the outbreak have been reported from seven states. There are now 18 reported cases from 15 states. Four people have been hospitalised, but no deaths have been reported.
Epidemiological and laboratory evidence has established a link with Garden of Life RAW Meal products. Public health laboratories in Utah and Oklahoma have isolated the outbreak strain of Salmonella Virchow from open containers of RAW Meal products collected from the homes of infected people.
Garden of Life LLC has expanded its 29th January recall to include additional lots of RAW Meal Organic Shake & Meal Chocolate, Original, Vanilla and Vanilla Chai products that may be contaminated with Salmonella Virchow. Warnings have also been issued for consumers in the UK and Ireland following notification from the FDA that the recalled products could have been supplied to businesses in other countries.
After a programme of testing contaminated products and ingredients in collaboration with the FDA, suppliers and other experts, Garden of Life has now identified the likely source of Salmonella contamination as Organic Moringa Leaf powder. This ingredient is used only in Raw Meal and not in the company’s other products.
