Sainsbury’s recalls watercress over outbreak link

| September 18, 2013

watercress+sainsburysUK supermarket chain Sainsbury’s is recalling all own-label bagged watercress and salads containing watercress in response to a possible link with an outbreak of verocytotoxin-producing E. coli (VTEC).

Public Health England reports that as of 10 September 18 people in England Wales and Scotland have been made ill by the same VTEC strain, with further suspected cases waiting to be confirmed. Preliminary epidemiological investigations suggest a link with watercress purchased from Sainsbury’s since 1 August and the supermarket has therefore recalled the products as a precautionary measure.
