| February 9, 2016

RAWmealThe US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Virchow infection that has been linked to RAW Meal Organic Shake & Meal powdered supplements and meal replacement powders produced by Garden of Life LLC.

The outbreak strain of Salmonella Virchow has so far been confirmed in 11 people from nine states and one person has been hospitalised. No deaths have been reported.

Epidemiological and laboratory evidence has established a link with Garden of Life RAW Meal products. Ten of the people affected by the outbreak reported consuming the suspected supplements and meal replacement powders in the week before they became ill and health officials in Utah and Oregon report that Salmonella has been isolated from open containers of the products collected from the homes of people affected. Further testing is under way to confirm whether the isolates correspond to the outbreak strain.

Garden of Life voluntarily recalled certain RAW Meal Organic Shake & Meal products on 29 January to protect consumers, although the company states that all lots of finished product are tested for Salmonella before release and no products have ever tested positive.

More information about the outbreak investigation can be found here, and details of the recalled products are available here.
