Sliced, spiral ham products recalled for possible Listeria contamination

| January 23, 2014

005-2014The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced that Gusto Packing of Montgomery, Illinois is recalling approximately 67,113 pounds of sliced spiral ham products because of concerns about possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

Four different products are included in the recall, packed in 45.5-lb, 45.8-lb, or 31.6-lb cases containing four or six individual hams and bearing the establishment number “EST.2516” and ‘use by’ dates of “02/06/14”, or “2014 FE 13”. The hams were distributed to wholesalers for further distribution in four US states and in Canada.

The contamination was identified by Gusto Packing’s own internal sampling programme, which found that some products tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. The contaminated products were frozen and held for “reconditioning” but were later inadvertently released into the supply chain. No related reports of illness have been received to date.
