Stir-fry vegetables recalled over toxic seed contamination

| May 24, 2013

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has announced that Green Isle is recalling 600g packs of frozen Harvest Stir Fry vegetables, beans and seeds because of possible contamination with datura seeds, which contain toxic tropane alkaloids.

The recalled product was made in Belgium and sold through Tesco Ireland stores. The recall was initiated in response to reports from Belgium that an ingredient may have been unintentionally contaminated with datura seeds.

Plants of the genus Datura (also known as angel’s trumpets) are members of the family Solanaceae and their seeds contain a number of toxic compounds, such as scopolamine and atropine, which are both toxic and hallucinogenic.
